Introducing: The Pursuit.

Hey, it's Amanda Dagley and welcome to the new website for Electric Zee! To kick off this introduction, I'd like to share with everyone a show idea that I have been incubating for the last several months. "The Pursuit" is a storytelling show. A place for Gen X to share the things they had to do all in the name of getting culture in small town USA.

It's for the kids who had to rely on allowance money to go to the store to buy a rock magazine or rent a cult classic on VHS. It's for the kids who swapped records and tapes, dubbing them (and taping songs off the radio too.)

If you are a Gen Xer (1965-1980) then you remember how hard it was to find cool stuff, especially if you were into music and lived in a small town.

As much as I love the Internet, it's made it really easy to find anything you want, simply by typing in a few words into a search engine. At the risk of sounding like a little old lady, back in my day, we really had to dig and get creative, when it came to finding culture and that was half the fun of it.

This first episode is both an introduction and a glimpse into my own pursuit of culture, starting with the discovery of one of my favorite bands, Mr. Bungle.

From the first time I popped the self-titled debut album by Mr. Bungle into my Walkman, I knew that I would never listen to music the same way again. That album marked a turning point in my life and I wanted to honor its place. If you'd like to hear my story, you can listen to it on YouTube:

Also, if you're curious about the show intro, I recorded my feet (along with other ambient sounds) walking down the sidewalk, in front of my childhood home. It felt appropriate, considering how much walking I did with my Walkman, all over Au Sable Forks. I was going for a PBS "Mystery!" vibe and it didn't turn out that way at all, but my heart was in the right place.

(1984 vs 2024)

I developed this idea because I know there are many other folks from my generation, just bursting to tell the stories about how they had to hunt for music, movies, and other media.

If you want to share your stories with me, please email me: amandadagleytalksalot@gmail.com PS: I'll have an announcement coming soon about adding online radio to electriczee.com. I'm waiting to schedule a demo next with the hosting company for pricing estimates. Thank you for being here for this new adventure and I look forward to hearing about your own small town cultural pursuits.
